On April 27, the Seattle community showed up to celebrate the 21st Annual White Center Cambodian New Year Festival.

This all-day New Year’s event, organized by the Cambodian Cultural Alliance of Washington, was packed with programming that’d please any ancestors. Through the downpour of rain, festivalgoers gathered for monk blessings, traditional dance performances, a bok lahong (green papaya salad) contest, delicious Cambodian foods, and many more activities.

Learn About Washington’s Nuclear Waste at the International Uranium Film Festival

The International Uranium Film Festival (IUFF) — dedicated to nuclear issues worldwide — runs from Friday, April 12, to Sunday, April 14, at the Northwest Film Forum (NWFF) at 1515 12th Ave. The festival’s 2024 U.S. tour began on March 7 in Window Rock, Arizona, the capital of the Navajo (Diné) Nation, with respect for the Native American Peoples who are suffering most from the consequences of uranium mining and nuclear testing. The IUFF is showing films in over 10 U.S. cities and in Vancouver, B.C. The selection of films is chosen to address nuclear activities in that part of the country — including the use of nuclear mining, nuclear power, nuclear weapons and testing, and nuclear waste.

Arts in the South End: April 2024 Roundup

Seattle’s Premier Cumbia Festival Is Bidi Bidi Bom Back

The Burien festival fundraiser named after Selena’s hit song returns April 13, 14, and 20.

Bidi Bidi Bom Bash is back again to bring its three-day event full of community vendors, markets, and best of all, cumbia rhythms to the South End.

Festivities will begin next month on April 13 and will kick off with a market at Lake Burien Presbyterian Church. Attendees will see an assortment of local vendors selling anything from art and jewelry to food. A “Bidi Bidi Bom Brunch” at La Esquina will follow the next day, April 14, and will feature drag performances. The festival will end on April 20 with its official cumbia dance event called “Aguacero,” a nod to Seattle’s rainy weather, at Club Sur in SoDo. Both Bidi Bidi Bom Brunch and Aguacero require tickets, which range from $10 to $80. All but Aguacero will be all-ages events.

The houses on South Southern Street and 10th Avenue South were quiet and still under the clear skies of a Saturday afternoon on Jan. 20. Cars lined the curb on both sides of the road, but few people stirred. 

Meanwhile, chatter, laughter, and the slightly spicy aroma of fresh tacos and tamales filled the main room of the brick building on the corner. Pastel-colored balloons welcomed visitors to the door, which was propped open in spite of the chill outside.

It’s the Year of the Wood Dragon!

The Lunar New Year is an important holiday in cultures across Asia, beckoning the arrival of spring and generally celebrated with food, dance, family, and tons of convivial festivities.

In 2024, the world is welcoming the Year of the Wood Dragon, with the dragon itself representing good luck and protection. “The element of wood is seen in Daoist tradition as a return to the natural state of being, which in the dragon’s case points to a return to kindness,” NBC News reports. “And Confucian thought interprets wood as a symbol of unlimited potential.”

‘King Day 2024’ at the Northwest African American Museum

NAAM’s MLK Day brought together speakers, activities, and a variety of exhibits.

On Jan. 15, 2024, the Northwest African American Museum (NAAM) held an event, King Day 2024, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., to honor the legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. With free entry, visitors were able to enjoy this activity-packed day with their family and friends while discussing race, the importance of social justice for all, and how to continue the work of King and other civil rights leaders.

PHOTO ESSAY | Seattle Celebrates the Life of MLK Jr. in 2024

Thousands of people ignored the unusually cold temperatures in Seattle to show up for the 41st annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Rally and March at Garfield High School on Jan. 15. This year’s celebration of MLK Jr.’s life was dedicated to longtime supporters of the event, the International Association of Machinists District 751 and Ezell’s Famous Chicken. In addition to a jobs fair that ran from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the Garfield High School commons, attendees could choose from 17 different workshops on topics ranging from reproductive justice and bystander intervention to the future of the labor movement and reparations.
