On Monday, May 29, 23rd Avenue and Jackson Street was full of soulful music, lively dancing, tasty food, and over 100 Black vendors as Africatown Community Land Trust (ACLT) hosted their third annual Honoring Our Black Wall Streets event. The event honored the 102nd anniversary of the massacre and decimation of Black Wall Street in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Sistah Scifi’s Book Vending Machine Comes to the Northwest African American Museum

Tucked into a corner in Shoreline’s Black-owned Black Coffee Northwest (BCNW), sits a bright blue and purple vending machine. This vending machine isn’t like other vending machines, stuffed with stale Fritos and old Rice Krispie treats. Instead, it’s filled with science-fiction books by Black authors — just swipe your credit card, and a book by Nichelle Nichols or Octavia Butler is all yours.

Black-Owned Business Excellence Symposium Kicks Off Tomorrow in Tacoma

Attend in-person or virtually, for a ‘lifeline, and an asset map’ for Black entrepreneurs.

The fourth annual Black-Owned Business Excellence Symposium will kick off Black History Month tomorrow, Feb. 1, at the University of Washington Tacoma — William W. Philip Hall from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This will be the first in-person edition of the event since 2020. The organizers hope to celebrate, learn, and build connections among Black-owned businesses.

As we celebrate Black Business Month, it’s important to acknowledge that Black women are achieving more and doing more today than ever, especially in growing their small businesses. One reason for that is the increased use of technology in most businesses and workplaces. From being business owners, and mothers, while also working full-time, technology and the Internet age we live in are providing women with tools to succeed.

One of this month’s largest national headlines has been the search of Mar-a-Lago by federal investigators in their attempts to retrieve classified documents from former President Donald Trump. We offer a brief update of continued news around the search, including resources for those who want to dive deeper into the timeline, as well as share the latest filing by the Department of Justice, which alleges obstruction of justice charges.

A new University of Washington study analyzes cellphone data and “Black-owned” labels on websites, to find that while they were beneficial for businesses to use in 2020, following the uprisings for racial justice, their long-term benefits may not be as clear.

Sept. 6 is also Cynthia A. Green Day, which celebrates the pillar of the Skyway community.

Black-Owned 23rd Ave Brewery Opening Soon in the Central District

On a recent sunny afternoon, as school let out at nearby Washington Middle School, I met with two owners of the new 23rd Ave Brewery in the Central District. Located on the corner of 23rd Avenue and South Jackson Street, the brewery is one of only two Black-owned in Seattle, the other being Métier, also in the Central District.

Renton Entrepreneur Brings Sea Moss to the South End and Beyond

When Dannett Cage, owner of Beyond Bodi, began a Black-owned business selling skin care and edible products infused with sea moss, it was in response to increasing requests from friends and family to try, and often buy, her homemade products.

“I was really only making it just for my family, like my mom and my household,” Cage recalls. “Then, I made some on a Friday evening as I was going out for a girls’ getaway that weekend, and everyone tried it and couldn’t believe the energy it gave them.”

Community Care at Independent, Black-Owned Othello Station Pharmacy

Ahmed Ali came to the New Holly neighborhood of southeast Seattle in 1998 with his family as Somalian refugees. Twenty years later, in 2018, Ali opened Othello Station Pharmacy in the very same neighborhood. It is one of the only independent, Black-owned pharmacies in Seattle. And unlike huge pharmacy chains, Othello Station Pharmacy offers a community approach and understanding to the labyrinth of the health care system.

“I managed a Walgreens for some time, and I just decided that I really wanted to do something different, because I saw a lot of disparities in access, availability, and resources for a large number of the Black population in southeast Seattle and south King County,” Ali said in an interview with the South Seattle Emerald. “To actually reduce disparities when it comes to Black and Brown folks, I think the easiest and fastest way to actually address those issues is through community-owned health systems.”

Buy From Black, Indigenous, and BIPOC Businesses This Holiday Season

Now that we are through the hectic online shopping seasons of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, many find that they are still looking for items to cross off on their shopping lists. And while the issues of inflation and bare shelves might make it harder to find what you need, especially for last-minute shoppers, they also provide a great opportunity to support local small businesses by shopping directly from Black, Indigenous, and BIPOC-owned businesses that could benefit from your hard-earned dollars. Remember, in order to move toward equity, it is paramount that we shift our funds into the hands of those who have been systematically shut out from acquiring wealth. If you are looking for somewhere to start, here is a guide to help you in your quest (but remember to check with sites or stores for shipping deadlines):
