Northwest Bookshelf Brings the Magic of Musical Theater to the Classroom

In February, The 5th Avenue Theatre will tour local schools with its educational show, the Northwest Bookshelf series. This series started in 1994, under the name Adventure Musical Theatre, as a way to bring the magic of musical theater out of a traditional theater environment and into the classroom.

Thriving in Top 40: Besa Gordon Wants to Inspire a New Generation of Radio Hosts

One of the few Black women in Seattle’s Top 40 radio shows, Besa Gordon has been hosting iHeartRadio’s HITS 106.1 weeknight and Sunday shows since October 2022. From her start as a blogger, to joining iHeartRadio’s street team, to becoming an award-winning media personality and digital manager at Black media production company Converge Media, Gordon has come a long way to establish herself as one of the most recognizable voices on Seattle’s radio waves.

Reciprocity Project Highlights Indigenous Storytelling and Values

Reciprocity Project, a series of seven Indigenous-made documentary short films, combines Native American storytelling with climate awareness and other intersectional movements rooted in Indigenous guardianship, social justice, and human rights. The first season of the project debuted on Oct. 10, and it’s already available to stream.

‘Set Us Free From Fear: Faith, White Supremacy and Electoral Politics’ Kicks Off This Sunday

Valley and Mountain Fellowship’s Center for Faith, Art, and Justice, in partnership with the Innovation Vitality Team of the Pacific Northwest Conference of the United Methodist Church, will host Set Us Free From Fear: Faith, White Supremacy and Electoral Politics, a series of four events, where scholars, clergy, and activists working at the intersection of race and faith will come together to discuss important topics with the broader community. The South Seattle Emerald is a media partner of this event.

Get Ready for T’Challaween — a South End Tribute to Our Heroes

The South Seattle Emerald’s third annual costume parade, T’Challaween — A South End Tribute to Our Heroes, returns on Saturday, Oct. 29, 1–4 p.m. As in previous years, the parade takes place along the Beacon Hill Stay Healthy Street — beginning on 18th Avenue South and South College Street and ending at Jefferson Park (via the South Spokane Street entrance).
