“Our overall mission is to improve South Seattle neighborhoods by mobilizing the caring power of the community. This year we started a unique storytelling campaign, called Southend Connect, featuring stories of local business owners and community leaders who make our neighborhoods rich and diverse places to live and grow.
“On Sept. 19, we will bring together the voices of the local business and residents and explore how storytelling can enrich and build community. As an engaged community member, our hope is to foster economic growth for local small businesses which bring character and substance to our neighborhoods. Together, we stand as neighbors who make a difference.
“In essence, the mission of Southend Connect is simply stated as: Connecting our Communities.”

Randy Ford + CD Forum present Queen Street
“QUEEN STREET is a physicalized experience through the lens of queer, trans, non binary, and gender nonconforming people of color. This full length evening dance show highlights the importance of centering intersectionality by giving audiences a peek inside the physical, mental, and spiritual transitions of its performers. Randy Ford (Au Collective, Black Bois) creator and performer, uses dance, theater, photography, video, and song to show how evolution doesn’t just happen once but we are in an ever evolving state. The cast and crew are all made up of Queer, Trans, non binary, gender non conforming (gnc), artists of color who live in Seattle, WA. Too often are these stories blurred, erased, and appropriated by pop culture. This show brings those that reside in the margins front and center to be seen and heard.
“What started off as a solo project now involves 9 of Seattle’s electrifying creatives: Randy Ford – Creator; Dominique Stephens – Production Manager; Kuo-Hao – Set Designer; Nic Masangkay – Music Producer; Dominique Thomas – Lighting Technician; Kat Young – Photographer; Saira Barbaric – Collaborating Performer; Keelan Johnson – Collaborating Performer; Chip Sherman – Collaborating Performer & Co-produced with Central District Forum for Arts & Ideas (shoutout to Sharon, Nina, and Merri Ann).”

“Youth around the world have been striking for their right to a healthy future, and they are calling on all of us to join them. That’s why on Sept. 20, we will be walking out of our schools, workplaces and homes to join millions of people around the world demanding climate justice and an end to the age of fossil fuels.
“The Global Climate Strike is shaping up to be the largest climate mobilization in history. It kicks off a week of global action that will use art, music, stories and nonviolent direct action to disrupt business-as-usual and create the climate justice future we need.
“Join us for a peaceful & powerful youth-centered mobilization. We are a broad coalition of youth leaders and adult allies all across the Seattle area, and we are demanding climate action at scale with the crisis: no new fossil fuel projects, just and equitable climate solutions to transition to 100% renewable energy, and holding those most responsible for the climate crisis accountable.” This event starts at Cal Anderson Park. There will be a march from there to City Hall at 12:30 p.m. Amazon Employees and other tech company employees and those who work in downtown Seattle have an alternate meeting time and place. Let Us Tell It Film Series: Beloved
“September’s feature film Beloved is an adaptation of Toni Morrison’s novel Beloved. We celebrate the life and legacy of one of history’s most prolific writers, Toni Morrison. The Northwest African American Museum is in continued mourning at the loss of a literary pillar and historically informed architect that both continued and transformed storytelling of the black experience. In this film adaptation of Toni Morrison’s Beloved, the destructive legacy of slavery is examined as it chronicles the life of a black woman named Sethe, from her pre-Civil War days as an enslaved woman in Kentucky to her time in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1873. This film screening is free & open to the Public.”

“Often compared to Cesária Évora, Lucibela sings traditional Cape Verdean music including the bittersweet ballads called mornas – a creole cousin of the fado from Portugal, with whom Cape Verde has a long history as a former colony. After years of playing at hotels in the capital city of Praia where she met many influential musicians, Lucibela recorded her first album (Laçon Umbilical) with Toy Vieira, a legendary Cape Verdean musician who has played with other critically-acclaimed vocalists such as Tito Paris and Lura. This is the first time that Lucibela will be bringing her rich and expressive vocal style to a Seattle stage.”
