ELECTIONS UPDATE: Late Ballots Give Morales the Win, Leave Other Progressives Lacking

As of Wednesday, Nov. 15, almost all remaining ballots have been counted in Seattle’s odd-year City Council election. Late ballots, which have historically favored progressives, did their thing in District 2, catapulting incumbent Tammy Morales from a nearly 9-point deficit to a 1.6-point lead.

A ballot drop from King County Elections on Friday, Nov. 10, brought a change of fortune for progressive City Council incumbent Tammy Morales: She now leads challenger Tanya Woo in what’s turned into a topsy-turvy District 2 race.

With about half of the ballots that King County Elections (KCE) expects to receive for Tuesday’s odd-year City and County elections already counted, District 2, encompassing the Chinatown-International District (CID) and South Seattle, has a clear favorite to win: landlord and community-safety advocate Tanya Woo.

On October 5, 2023, at 7:00 p.m., the South Seattle Emerald will host a debate between Seattle City Council District 2 incumbent Tammy Morales and challenger Tanya Woo, moderated by Mike Davis, the Emerald’s Voices editor.

The Seattle City Council has a great deal of impact on our communities. They are supposed to allocate funds and monitor the impact and effectiveness of all City services except education. As a community-based organization, serving District 2, we want to be sure these candidates hear YOUR questions and understand YOUR priorities.

OPINION | Why I Support Tanya Woo for District 2

Ahead of the Aug. 1 primary election, the South Seattle Emerald invited community members to voice their support for the candidates for District 2 of the Seattle City Council race. The opinions, beliefs, and viewpoints expressed below do not necessarily reflect the opinions, beliefs, and viewpoints of the Emerald or official policies of the Emerald.

In addition to candiate Tanya Woo, community members also wrote an op-ed for candidate Tammy Morales.


The reason I’m voting for Tanya Woo is because of one word: empathy.

Empathy is more than compassion; it is the ability to see the world from a different perspective. As the problems in our city continue to grow, we need to act with compassion and create dialogue that brings us together. We don’t need ideologues who think they know what is best for South Seattle. We need people who will show up, listen, and do the hard work to tackle the problems. We deserve that.

Tammy Morales is the progressive leader we need on the City Council. The issues Seattle’s Communities of Color deal with are serious and require real solutions. Tammy governs with transparency, and she values community collaboration when addressing our district’s toughest challenges. We urge you to vote for Tammy on Aug. 1, and here’s why.
