Here at the South Seattle Emerald, we’re part of the Voter Education Fund, a King County nonpartisan project to encourage as many potential voters to register and vote.

Election Officials Fight Misinformation With Voter Awareness Campaign

King County Elections Director Julie Wise — a 22-year elections veteran who has done everything from answering phones to drawing precinct maps to staffing polling places to the transition to mail-in voting — has never seen anything like she is seeing now: A climate of suspicion and distrust over the electoral process eroding the bedrock foundation of American democracy.

“Through all of those years,” Wise said, “I have never experienced an elections landscape like the one we’re in today.”

CAIR Washington has filed a lawsuit against Alaska Airlines alleging discrimination against two Black male Muslim passengers from Sudan. Meanwhile, in ongoing attempts to pass reproductive rights legislation in the aftermath of the overturning of Roe v. Wade, Mayor Bruce Harrell signed into law four bills passed by Seattle City Council; a fifth is in committee.

New Holly residents looking to spend more time in the library will be delighted to hear that its local Seattle Public Library branch will now be reopening on Sundays, plus King County Elections is hiring outreach coordinators for those who are fluent in Russian and Somali!

To Boost Voter Turnout, King County Proposal Would Move Elections to Even Years

The King County Council is expected to vote next week on a plan that would move County elections to even-numbered years, a change aimed at increasing overall voter turnout. Supporters say the shift could boost participation, particularly among underrepresented groups, such as young people and Communities of Color.

New Americans, New Right to Vote

It’s easy for those born in the United States to take the vote for granted.

But for those Annie Dimitras works with at the Refugee Women’s Alliance, or ReWA, the right to vote is taken seriously — almost like a sacred right.

“A lot of the people we work with at my organization are voting for the very first time, their very first opportunity,” said Dimitras, senior immigration & civic engagement program coordinator at ReWA. “They may be 70 and this is the first chance they’ve ever had to vote.”
