This month, Washington could become the twentieth state to eliminate the death penalty. Last week, the State Senate passed SB 6052, a bill to reduce criminal prosecution expenses by replacing capital punishment with life imprisonment. Mayor Jenny Durkan Presents the State of the City at Rainier Beach High School

The Rainier Beach High School auditorium transformed Tuesday morning. A reception desk of suited city employees checked attendees into the hall, with seating sections reserved for community groups, county, and city officials. A ribbon of camera operators struggled to stand tripods between rows of the stadium seating. Journalists tapped away on glowing laptops as the lights dimmed. The words “State of the City” stood emblazoned across the projector screen in a font reminiscent of local hipster bars everywhere. When my dad texted me “School shooting at Stoneman Douglas today” at 2:13pm PST on February 14, 2018, I didn’t really know what to expect. I was busy. I had meetings and deadlines. I couldn’t be bothered. Over an hour later, I replied: “Wow.” “I know, police just reported, 17 killed,” he got back to me immediately.

I still remember the day my brother told me he wore a bulletproof vest to school – the same school – Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School – in January 1998. Protestors Oppose Rainier Valley Charter School Construction

A group of about 20 protesters picketed the construction site of the Green Dot middle school on Rainier Ave S. Thursday, less than half a mile from the existing Aki Kurose Middle School. Posting signs reading “Charters Drain Resources” and “Public School = Democracy”, they elicited honks from passing motorists on Rainier.
